Hormone Imbalances and Its Effect Upon Women’s Health

Health problems or dis-ease are the result of imbalances in a woman’s body and life. Many of the problems and symptoms people blame on the sex hormones can be related to other hormones in a woman’s body.

Examples showing which hormones can cause the same health problems and symptoms during the reproductive years are:

  • Hot flashes can be caused by an imbalance in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and/or thyroid hormones

  • Vaginal atrophy [thinning and drying of the vaginal wall] can be caused by an imbalance in estrogen, and/or testosterone

  • Reduced pubic hair can be caused by an imbalance in testosterone

  • Decreased stress adaptation (a decreased ability to deal with stress) can be caused by an imbalance progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, melatonin, and/or thyroid hormones
  • Fine wrinkle appearance can be caused by imbalances in estrogen and/or testosterone
  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding can be caused by an imbalance in estrogen, progesterone, and/or thyroid hormones

The following illustration shows the pattern of both estrogen production and progesterone throughout a woman’s life. This illustration very clearly shows the risk of breast cancer for a woman when her estrogen and progesterone are not in the proper ratio.
