Toxins and Their Effect Upon Women’s Health
Every cell in the body is part of a tissue or organ, produces energy, and makes waste products that need to be eliminated from the body. If the cells, tissues, and organs in a woman's body get filled with toxins, and cannot remove them, the cells, tissues, and organs cannot function properly.
People say that they do not eat toxins or drink poisons, but the body considers everything that is not food to be toxic or poison to the body. Toxins or poisons are absorbed into the body through the skin, are in what we eat, drink, or breathe in.
Examples of substances that are toxic or poison to the body are: prescription medications [they are chemicals, not food], over–the–counter medications [they contain additives, preservatives, binders, fillers, etc.], recreational drugs including alcohol and products containing caffeine [coffee, tea, cola, chocolate], first hand and second hand smoke, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, additives, preservatives and food colorings.
As these toxins and poisons get into our blood stream, they pass through our liver. The liver, is the only chemical factory in the body, ie. the only organ in the body that tries to make the toxins and poisons water soluble so they can be eliminated from the body when we have a bowel movement, when we urinate, when we breath, and when we sweat. This can be seen in the following illustration [the abbreviation H2O is used for water].
However, over time, the liver, like an oil filter can get clogged up, and not function as well as it normally would. The toxins cannot be made water–soluble, and instead of being flushed out of the body through one of the body’s emunctories or organs of elimination, they are deposited in the fatty organs, tissues, and cells in a woman’s body. The most common places that toxins are deposited in a woman’s body are her brain, breasts, and ovaries. This is shown in the following illustration.
Fortunately, even the most toxic livers, with the proper care and support, can be healed and regain its ability to work properly. The best way to visualize how toxins can affect the body is to think of a container filled with liquid Jell–O. Place slices of banana and three straws in the liquid Jell–O and let it set. This is shown in the following illustration.
This is a physical idea of what the body looks like at the cellular level. The slices of banana [yellow] represent cells. The red straw represents an artery, the blue straw represents a vein, the green straw represents the lymphatic system, and the Jell–O represents the ground matrix or mesenchyme that surrounds every cell in the body. The arrows in the illustration show nutrients going from an artery or arteriole to the cells. However, as mentioned before, over time, the liver like an oil filter can get clogged up and not function as well as it normally would. The toxins are not made water–soluble, and instead of being flushed out of the body through one of the body’s emunctories or organs of elimination, they are deposited in the organs tissues and cells. This affects the ability of the body to get nutrients from the arteries to the cells. This is shown in the following illustration.
Also, because of the toxic build up in the ground matrix or mesenchyme, the wastes from the cells can’t get to the vein or lymphatic system, so more toxins are deposited in the ground matrix or mesenchyme. This is shown in the following illustration.
A woman with a toxic ground matrix or mesenchyme such as this, cannot benefit from even organically grown food, which is properly digested and absorbed into the blood stream, as the nutrients cannot reach the cells where they are used. Therefore, they are just flushed out of this woman’s body unused.
The two most common toxins that women take into their bodies on a regular basis are caffeine and alcohol.
In 1985, a research article was published in the prestigious medical journal JAMA [Journal of the American Medical Association]. Thousands of women, with polycystic breasts [many cysts in their breasts], participated in the research study. Half of the women were put on a totally caffeine free diet [no coffee, tea, cola, or chocolate] and half of the women were put on a restricted caffeine diet. The research article reported that, the women who were on the totally caffeine free diet, had all the cysts disappear from their breasts after only one month, and that those women who were on the restricted caffeine diet, had some of the cysts disappear from their breasts after a month. When the women who were on the restricted caffeine diet changed to a totally caffeine free diet, all of the cysts in their breasts disappeared. In spite of the significant results of this study, I have not met one woman who has been told about the association between caffeine and breast cysts by their medical practitioner.
Since that research study in 1985, many health practitioners have written about the various health problems caused by caffeine. Caffeine:
- is linked to acne
- is linked to infertility
- causes heart palpitations
- stimulates bowel movements
- makes a woman’s body toxic
- can lead to magnesium deficiency
- over stimulates the adrenal glands
- decreases human growth hormone
- converts testosterone into estradiol
- causes breast swelling and tenderness
- affects hormone/endocrine metabolism
- may help to cause reoccurring depression
- affects a woman’s sleep by lowering her melatonin level
- causes Syndrome X [insulin resistance / hyperinsulinemia]
- coffee [not caffeine from chocolate or cola] causes the body to make more estrogen
- causes disturbed sleep, even with only one cup of coffee in the morning
- lowers serotonin levels leading to the craving of carbohydrates and sugar
- affects the liver’s ability to eliminate caffeine from the body [affects liver metabolism]
- irritates the urinary bladder causing a woman to need to urinate and making stress incontinence worse
- coffee contains rancid oils and free radicals that can lower antioxidant levels and damage blood vessels
- causes loss of calcium from the bones [found in the urine] when a woman has two–8 oz. cups of coffee or five–8 oz. servings of cola in a day
Alcohol has also been associated with various health problems including:
- raising triglyceride levels
- increasing estrogen levels
- affecting a woman’s memory
- making a woman’s body toxic
- making depression last longer
- raising a woman’s blood pressure
- increasing the risk of colon cancer
- converting testosterone into estradiol
- affecting a woman’s ability to make new bone
- affecting the liver’s ability to process estrogen
- causing excess blood sugar to be stored as fat
- irritating the digestive system and causing bloating
- causing a woman to wake in the middle of the night
- providing empty calories which cause fat weight gain
- affecting a woman’s sleep by lowering her melatonin level
- decreasing serotonin levels by increasing cortisol and adrenalin
- increasing the level of pregnenolone in a woman’s brain and causing sleepiness
- increasing a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer [one large glass of alcohol increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 7%]
- causing an imbalance in all of the major hormones [adrenalin, insulin and cortisol]
- waking a woman between 2 AM and 4 AM by blocking the liver’s ability to provide a woman’s brain with blood sugar
One thing that women need to remember is that, like the pharmaceutical companies and tobacco companies, wine producers and coffee producers also invest a lot of money in getting research done to prove that there are benefits from drinking wine and coffee. For example, these paid researchers don’t point out that the benefits that have been found from drinking red wine, could also be attained just by a woman eating grapes or taking a natural remedy that has a concentration of the beneficial ingredients of grapes. Therefore, woman can get the benefits of red wine without having to drink alcohol which is a neurotoxin [a poison to the nervous system] and has bad effects upon a woman’s sex hormones and quality of life.
Being aware of the many problems caused by toxins such as caffeine and alcohol, a woman can then make her own individual decision as to whether she wants to completely eliminate these substances from her life, or attempts to minimize their use in her life.
